Is This Okay Now?: Stray Cats Style

Time to trot out a new feature you’ll see in this space from time to time.

Speaking of time, it has changed over the decades. So..I will put out a piece of video from days gone by and leave the question to you readers out there: Is this okay now?

Our first entry comes from the retro-themed (back in the 80’s) music group The Stray Cats fronted by lead singer Brian Setzer. His group came out with a song in 1983 called (She’s) Sexy and 17. It’s about a teen who doesn’t want to go to school. He just wants to hang out with his “little Marie”. Here’s the video.

If you like the rockabilly-style, Chuck Berry rock sound..it’s a catchy tune. But I have a question. The Stray Cats..in some incarnation..is still active and Setzer on his last birthday inched further into his 60s. Can you still perform this song and not seem just a bit on the creepy side?

Don’t get me wrong..Setzer is an amazing musician. If you’ve heard the Brian Setzer Orchestra bust out Jump, Jive and Wail, you know that much is clear.

But even “little Marie” might hear Setzer sing (She’s) Sexy and 17 in 2020..say a quiet ‘Eww’ to herself and wonder…Is This Okay Now?

I'd Love To Hear From You
