Is This Okay Now?: Bill Cosby

His crime — for which he has been convicted — has been well documented.

Bill Cosby was once regarded as the funniest man in America. That is until it was learned that several women over many decades accused him of taking advantage of them using drugs. One woman — Andrea Constand — went before a jury (twice) and convinced them he was guilty.

Since then Cosby’s classic comedy has not been well received or even regularly consumed. So I ask: Is this okay now?

His stand-up film Bill Cosby: Himself has been regarded as the best of its kind ever. If you can still stomach it, here’s a clip.

Regardless of what many think about it..I found myself trying to hold back laughter when I recently went back and watched some of the YouTube clips of the concert.

At that moment it clicked. It was the ‘holding back’.

I believe this is an indication of where we are with Cosby. Even in moments by ourselves — given what a jury found him guilty of — some feel reservation about laughing — out loud — at this man’s comedy.

Humor is humor. It doesn’t all of a sudden become “unfunny”. However..in the social climate of today, we must still wonder..

“Is this okay now?”

  1. I think it’s unfortunate that his personal challenge overshadows his cultural contribution. It is okay to laugh at what you find humor in, which mostly is about his life’s experience. This is the celebrity “pitfall” – you are idolized over the frailty of being human. Those that struggle to see his humanity should take a step back and take a good look in the mirror. You can detest his actions but that doesn’t release our role (society) in making the culture of marginalizing women acceptable in the first place.
