Getting The Band Back Together

What has it been…more than 30 years???

This week, a very close-knit group of friends from the College of Charleston in South Carolina and I will be getting together for a bit of a reunion. We were bonded together through music…singing together in various vocal ensembles (so don’t let the title of this post fool you. We were not in a ‘band’ per se). Some of the closest of us sang together in as part of a group that sang medieval music: The College of Charleston’s Madrigal Singers.

That’s me…fourth from the right. Many of us were also in the school’s Concert Choir.

Over the years, many in our circle have accomplished much professionally. We are college professors, journalists, public school teachers, accomplished vocalists — our talents cover an entire range. Many of us have gotten married, had children and seen some of those kids go off to college and graduate,

But…I’m happy to say…we never lost our connection. On occasion we’ve had opportunities to visit with one another and catch up. But it’s been since the early 90s that we — as somewhat of a unit — have been able to get together. There will be food and drink and fun and most importantly a lot of music.

I’ll be sharing my thoughts on this gathering over the next posts to come. It will be wonderful to go to the old hometown, settle into a house we’ve rented and renew some old but cherished acquaintances.

Someone once said:

“The best friends in the world are the ones you don’t need to meet every day. Whether it’s been a day or ten years, the conversation is the same.”

So true.
