Getting the Band Back Together: The Sights..and Sounds

We knew time was winding down for us.

So…it was time to see and do a few things we had not done in a while. The first thing we did on a Sunday morning (even though it was still closed to the public when we went) was visit the Angel Oak.

The tree itself is said to be at least 400 years old with branches spreading far beyond its base. Some as you can see rest on the ground. It is a Lowcountry treasure that has survived the extremes — from drought to hurricanes. I was born and raised in Charleston. While I have heard about and seen many photos of the Angel Oak, this was the first time I had seen it in person.

Later we went a bit closer to the city to meet one of the group at Old St. Andrews Parish Church — a beautiful place . Historically, it is the oldest church building still standing south of Virginia. It was built in 1706…and even today is still part of the Anglican Church. It remains South Carolina’s only surviving ‘colonial cruciform’ church…meaning it was built in the shape of a cross.

Thirty years ago our group was proud of the love we shared for music. We still share it. So, as we stood in this lovely little church with an amazing acoustic echo and intimate feel…and even though we had not sung together for decades…this happened.

For me…that was a moment that made years of waiting well worth it.

Next post…we’ll put a neat little bow on our time together.
